Meffert, a non-profit executive and active volunteer, lives in Edina with his wife Karrin and their three young children. Meffert’s motivation to run is based on his belief that even with the historic election of 2008, there is not yet enough determination in Washington DC to truly ‘get the job done’ for the American people. “There are so many things worth fighting for: our jobs, stronger schools, health reform, a strong economy and a culture that says helping our neighbors in difficult times is a good thing. These are the things that are important to the 3rd district—and the issues that have motivated my work. These are the things I will fight for in Congress!” said Meffert. Top priorities for Meffert include job creation, educational excellence, and meaningful health care reform. “I know the challenges faced by employers. Running a non-profit has all the same elements of any business. We have to set priorities with our budget, benefits we offer to employees, programs we want to continue, and every other item as our revenue fluctuates with the economic uncertainty,” Meffert commented, “having a representative in Congress who truly knows these challenges first-hand helps shape the way in which issues will be addressed.” “Our country and our economy need greater balance. The economic meltdown was due in large part to the fact that basic ‘rules of the game’ had changed or disappeared which encouraged reckless risk-taking on Wall Street. That truly has had a trickle-down effect, and one which has paralyzed far too many American families.” Meffert added that “our economic recovery will only be real when folks have stable jobs, decent benefits, and a sense of security about their future. Never did I think we’d see a time where people would be struggling as badly as they are now. We need to ‘right the ship’ and get our economy back in balance, our priorities back on track, and our focus on doing what is right for all Americans.” “The future strength of our country is based on the actions we take today. From stable employment to strong public education to secure health care, all of these affect whether our children will grow up in a society that places value on them. We need ensure that we help people live rather than continuing to tell people how to live. I’ll be a strong advocate for children as we consider policies in Washington that will have an impact on children in Brooklyn Center, Maple Grove, Edina, and all communities of the 3rd district,” Meffert concluded. |
